Under Level 15
Everything a new Nibbler needs to know to get started. Work through each section below.
Basics of Torn
Torn City is a text-based browser RPG set in a crime-ridden city where you build your character by leveling up a variety of systems. You'll be committing crimes, attacking other players, completing missions, taking education courses, earning merits, working jobs, chaining, warring, reviving... the list goes on! There is no single goal — Torn is a long-term game where progression compounds over months and years to whatever playstyle most suits you!
Energy
Energy is used in the gym to gain stats, to attack other players, and in other activities like reviving or hunting.
Refills over time up to a base cap of 100. Torn donators can increase this cap to 150 (Strongly recommended). Never let it sit at max — capped energy is wasted gains!
Nerve
What you spend to work on crimes.
Refills over time. Your natural nerve bar (NNB) will increase as your crime experience increases. Our faction perks also provide increased nerve.
Happy
The multiplier to your gym gains!
The higher your happiness, the more stats you gain every time you train in the gym. Better property grants more happiness - with the max base Happiness being achieved by living on a Private Island. You can take drugs and boosters to increase Happiness even further, but beware, this resets to the base level every 15 minutes, so time it well! (:00, :15, :30, :45)
Life
Your health/hit points!
You start with 100 life and can increase this to 7500 (with merit upgrades) once you hit level 100. When you hit 0 life from being attacked, failing an OC, or other events, you are put into the Hospital with a timer for your release. Life regenerates at 5% every 5 minutes, and you can speed this up using medical items.
Under 15 Actions to Take Immediately!
Rent the fully upgraded $1 Mansion from the Faction to upgrade your Happiness and Gym Gains. Message Gigamork →
Spend your Energy (e) in the gym. Keep doing this as much as you can until you gain several hundred stats in each battle stat (Strength, Speed, Defense, Dexterity) Gym, Training, and Happy Jumps →
Pick a crime and start spending your Nerve! Repeat until you hit 100, then move to the next Crime! Some are less expensive/complex than others. Crimes guide →
Get a job (ya bum!). When you work at a job, you gain job points and job-specific perks. There are vanilla TornCity jobs (Army, Grocer, Casino, Medical, Education and Law), and player-run Companies (35+ Company types to choose from). Every job has different benefits - so research which one might be perfect for you! Jobs guide →
Join an Education Course! We recommend BIO1340 then BIO2127 to Unlock the ability to use Bloodbags, Working towards Bachelors of Sports Science (to permanently boost all gym gains), Psychology (to permanently boost Crime XP and Skill Progression), and General Studies (to boost the working stat rewards from completing all other Educations). These 3 Bachelors provide % boosts to all your other progression. Education guide →
After 3 Days in the Faction:
- ▸You'll be able to loan yourself a Combat Armor Set and Armalite (or other weapon) from the Faction Armory Faction Armory →
- ▸Join an Organized Crime! (Select the highest level of success one you see - likely a Level 1 OC). Organized Crimes →
Use Baldr's List to find easy, inactive targets. If these are too tough for you, keep spending your e in the gym. If you can beat them, keep attacking until you hit Level 15! (Attacking is the best way to quickly earn XP!) Baldr's List →
Get started on Duke's Missions! If they are too hard - likely a sign to keep improving your battle stats. Do NOT spend your Mission Points - Save them to buy BOOKS! Missions →
Check out the Merit System and start working towards some of the easier ones! Merits earn you points you then spend on your own personal perk tree. Merits guide →
- ▸Education is the longest thread in the whole game - Max out your Education Bonus FIRST and as soon as you can.
- ▸Crime Progression, Nerve Bar, and Life Points would be our next recommendation to maximizing your progress.
- ▸Bank Interest - IF you plan on maxing out your Bank Interest and working towards the $2B bank investment
- ▸The rest is really up to your playstyle!
Beginner “Good to Know”
Avoid talking in global chat, complaining in forums (in Torn or on FB/Reddit unless using a different alias) or risk being trolled/attacked into oblivion.
Do not keep money on you if you can help it. Use the Faction Bank to deposit funds, and type /bank in any discord channel to submit a withdrawal. People will keep farming you if they get $ every time they mug you. Faction Vault →
You will get attacked. You will get mugged. It's easy to take great offense at this in the beginning - but this is a primary and very normal mechanic of the game. Beef between low levels can be fun. Beef between a low level and someone high level, or in a powerful faction, can turn bad for everyone very quickly.
- ▸Always investigate someone’s profile before deciding how to proceed:
- –Faction Strength
- –Age, Level, Drugs Taken, Spouse, Estimated Stats
- –Forum Posts, Friends/Enemies Count
If you start unnecessary drama or instigate something that makes our whole faction a target, you're likely to be kicked! On the flip side, if someone is unnecessarily hassling you, let us know in Discord so we can help!
Torn is a multi-year marathon! Every little perk and % boost can have a huge cumulative effect in the long run. We require a certain pace of development as a part of this faction, but outside of that, its up to you what niche you'd like to fill and how quickly you want to optimize your progression.
If you sell expensive items, you will likely get buy-mugged (someone purchases, you now have $2M on you, they mug you immediately to recoup some of their purchase). Hospitalize yourself or travel when selling big ticket items!
